Colon, Rectal & Hemorrhoid Procedures
All our treatments are tailored to each patient's needs.
At Keller Surgical Associates we offer different Colon, Rectal & Hemorrhoid Procedures.
Colon surgery is usually performed for:
This can be preformed as an open surgery, with a laparoscope or with the robot, which is especially useful for rectal surgery. Surgery involves removing the diseased part of the bowel and reconnecting it (also called an anastomosis).
The patient should expect to be admitted to the hospital after surgery. Their length of stay will be dependent on many factors.
This is usually done in difficult surgery circumstances with different factors related to the diseased colon, or due to multiple prior surgeries making laparoscopic surgery unsafe.
Laparoscopic colon surgery involves making 4 to 5 small incisions, depending on which part of the colon needs to be removed, and includes the use of a small telescope. A larger incision will be made to remove the colon out of the body.
We also utilize hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery with making an incision big enough to fit a hand through and that is the same incision where the colon is to be removed.
Robotic surgery is more accurately described as robotic assisted surgery where the surgeon still performs the surgery but uses a robot to help with difficult operations. The robot allows for smaller incisions and quicker recovery while having similar outcomes to open surgery.
The difference between standard laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery is having more flexibility with robotic instruments. Dr. Keller has been certified to use the DaVinci robotic system and has been using it for multiple years.
Hemorrhoids are actually part of the normal anatomy but can become a problem when they grow abnormally large. They are classified as either internal or external depending on the location they originate.
External hemorrhoids usually present themselves as a sudden painful knot after a hard bowel movement. Internal hemorrhoids are more chronic, and usually lack feeling, and are further classified on grades 1-4.
Hemorrhoids stay within the rectum. Treated with diet and medication.
Hemorrhoids come out of the rectum on their own and go back in on their own.
They can be treated with an in-office procedure called “banding” that involves placing a special rubber band around the hemorrhoid causing it to fall off.
Hemorrhoids that come out the rectum and have to be physically pushed back into the rectum.
Usually treated with surgery or banding.
Hemorrhoids come out of the rectum and stay out of the rectum.
These require surgery for removal.
